Mrs. Jackson/Rutledge's Class
This week in Mrs Jackson and Mrs Rutledge's co teaching classroom, the students learned all about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We read the story, My Brother Martin, written by his sister. We learned lots of new things about the historical civil rights leader. We discussed that the character of a person is what is most important, not the color of their skin. The students also participated in a directed drawing of MLK. This has been one of our favorite lessons this year.

Mrs. Handley's Class: Christmas Around the World
Students in Mrs. Handley’s Kindergarten
class are learning about different Christmas Traditions from around the
world. They began by looking at different countries to
see how children there celebrate Christmas. Next, they look for differences and similarities from how we celebrate
Christmas here in America. So far they have talked about Christmas in England, Mexico, Italy,
and Germany. This week they are going to
visit Holland, Israel, and Africa. As they are learning, the students make a page about each
country to put in their Christmas Traditions from Around the World book. In the pictures, the students are completing
the page for Germany where children get treats in their boots if they are on
Santa’s nice list or switches if they are on Santa’s naughty list. All of her students decided they wanted to be
on Santa’s nice list so they could get treats instead of switches! How about
you? Merry Christmas from Mrs. Handley's class to you!
BSLK Family Night
Big Spring Lake Kindergarten had Family Night on December 6th and 8th. The BSLK gym was full of family and friends who wanted to watch their little ones shine. The students dressed in Christmas colors and wore reindeer headbands with painted noses. They sang several Christmas songs with motions that they learned during weekly music classes with Ms. Comer. The students did a fantastic job and it was just the cutest Christmas program you have ever seen!

Mrs. Collins' Class
Mrs. Collins' class has been learning all about Thanksgiving this week. The children participated in the Turkey in Disguise Homework Project by reading the book Turkey Trouble. It's a story about a turkey that doesn't want to be eaten for Thanksgiving, so he disguises himself to trick the farmer. The children and their parents worked together using any materials they had at home to disguise their turkeys. Mrs. Collins displayed the projects in the hall for all of BSLK to see.

Ron Clark Academy
On Friday, November 4th, eight teachers from Big Spring Lake Kindergarten got to visit the Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta, Georgia. They observed Ron Clark as well as several other amazing teachers. The Academy is comprised of approximately 130 children within Fifth through Eighth grades. These teachers had the best time learning different strategies of teaching as well as how to teach children manners and how to use them in real world experiences. It was such an amazing experience for these teachers that they believe every educator should go if given the opportunity to visit Ron Clark!
