Mrs. Landers

Mrs. Sally Landers, Instructional Partner at BSLK, says  kindergarten teachers are extremely gifted
at building students’ knowledge through content rich non-fiction!
Close Reading involves focused reading and rereading of a text for the purpose of understanding
key points, gathering evidence, and building knowledge.
Mrs. Pam Brown’s class of little animal experts will soon visit the Birmingham Zoo.

What a fun month in the library! We were paleontologist and explored dinosaur bones! Then we moved on to help Michael Recycle to teach others about recycling. Don’t forget Earth is April 22nd!

In the ESL classes at BSLK,  we cover many themes and topics.  One of the most popular is the food unit.  Students learn the English names for the most common foods and get to discuss them and which ones are their favorites.  Students also learn plate, napkin, utensils, etc. so that they can "set a table".  Daily we talk about the school menu and what they eat for breakfast and lunch at school as well as what they eat for dinner at home.  The culmination of the unit is when they go "grocery shopping".  Students work in small groups of 2 or 3 and are given a list of what they need to "purchase".  They must find the items, put them in the "buggy" and bring them to the "check out" where they must tell the "cashier" (aka teacher)  what it is that they have. The picture shows groups getting their list and getting ready to begin shopping.
